Helpful Tips - Create a budget, seek scholarships/grants/work-study options, and reapply for needed aid to finish your higher education by completing the FAFSA annually.

Know About Your Loans - Never borrow more financial aid than you can afford to pay back. Visit StudentAid.gov to Complete an Annual Student Loan Acknowledgment each year you accept a new federal student loan. The goal is to help you understand how your loans affect your financial future. If this is your first time accepting a federal student loan, you will be acknowledging that you understand your responsibility to repay your loan. If you have existing federal student loans, you will be acknowledging that you understand how much you owe and how much more you can borrow.

Thinking About Leaving School Early/Dropping Classes - If you leave school or drop below half-time enrollment status, you will enter into a six-month grace period (for Stafford Loans) or into a post enrollment deferment (for graduate and professional students with GradPLUS loans) before beginning repayment of your loans—and MOHELA will be here to assist you.

Entering Grace - If you leave school or drop below half-time enrollment status, you will enter into a six-month grace period (for Stafford Loans) or into a post enrollment deferment (for graduate and professional students with GradPLUS loans) before beginning repayment of your loans—and MOHELA will be here to assist you.

A Direct PLUS loan enters repayment on the date the final disbursement of the loan is made. If during the Direct Plus Loan application process you elected to defer repayment while your student is in school, the loan will be placed on a Parent PLUS Deferment that will end on the date the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. Also, if you elected to defer repayment until six months after your student is no longer enrolled at least half-time, a Post-Enrollment Deferment will begin on the date the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time and will end six months after that date. During the deferment period, you will not be required to make any payments.

If you did not elect to defer payment when applying for your Direct Plus loans, you may request a Parent PLUS Deferment while your child is enrolled at least half-time and you will not need to make payments. You may also request a Post-Enrollment Deferment for an additional six months after your child graduates, leaves school, or drops below half-time enrollment. To request these deferments, complete and return the Parent Plus Deferment form  this link will open in a new window. Each school may define half-time differently. If you are unsure and need to determine the student’s enrollment status, please contact the school.

Qualified Loans for Deferment - To qualify for the Parent Plus Deferment you must be a parent borrower of a Direct or Federal PLUS Loan that was first disbursed on or after July 1, 2008 and the student on whose behalf you borrowed the PLUS Loan must be enrolled at least half-time.

Payments and Paying Down Interest - While you don't have to make payments on your loans after each loan is disbursed and during period of loan deferment, you always have the option to make payments towards your student loans which includes paying towards interest for any unsubsidized loans – this can save you money.

Interest - During any period when you are not required to make payments, interest will accrue on your loan. You may choose to pay the accrued interest or allow the interest to be capitalized (added to your loan principal balance) when you have to start making payments.

Repayment - If you do not request a deferment or your deferment has ended, you are expected to begin making payments after the loan is fully disbursed (paid out). Approximately 30-60 days prior to your first payment due, we will calculate your repayment terms and provide you with a schedule showing the repayment plan, when payments are due and the monthly payment amount. If this payment amount is not affordable, other payment options may be available. To estimate your monthly payment amount and explore payment plans, log into studentaid.gov and use the Loan Simulator  this link will open in a new window.

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans

Unless instructed otherwise, if you make a payment within 120 days of when a loan is disbursed (sent to your school), the amount will be applied directly to your original principal balance. These payments are considered a partial or full cancellation of the loan. This will reduce the total amount you owe and benefits you by possibly reducing any outstanding accrued interest and fees originally assessed at the time of disbursement.

If you would prefer, you can instruct us to have the payment applied as a standard payment instead by submitting your request in writing or by sending a Secure Message.

Note: Transactions applied as a cancellation of the loan reflect differently on your payment history. The posted date is the date the payment posts to your account. The effective date is backdated to the date the loan was disbursed.

PLUS Loans

Unless instructed otherwise, until your loan is fully disbursed and enters repayment, if you make a payment within 120 days of when a loan is disbursed (sent to your school), the amount paid will be applied directly to your original principal balance. These payments are considered a partial or full cancellation of the loan. This will reduce the total amount you owe and benefits you by possibly reducing any outstanding accrued interest and fees originally assessed at the time of disbursement.

If before your loan is fully disbursed and enters repayment you would prefer to have the payment applied as a standard payment instead, you can submit your request for this in writing or by sending a Secure Message.

Once fully disbursed your loan enters repayment and payments will be applied as a standard payment.

If after your loan is fully disbursed and enters repayment you would prefer to have a payment made within 120 days of the final disbursement applied as a cancellation, you can submit your request for this in writing or by sending a Secure Message. Keep in mind that cancellation payments do not pay bills. To prevent yourself from becoming past due, make standard payments for any required monthly payments that are due.

Note: Transactions applied as a cancellation of the loan reflect differently on your payment history. The posted date is the date the payment posts to your account. The effective date is backdated to the date the loan was disbursed.
